Mexico

If you are travelling from the USA, to within the Border Zone (usually up to 20 kilometers south of the USA - Mexico Border) or the Free Trade Zone (including the Baja California Peninsula and the Sonora Free Trade Zone) there are no special requirements. However, if you are hiring in, or plan on taking a US car car outside of these areas then you must follow these rules and present yourself and your vehicle at a Mexican customs point (Vehicular Control Module) with the following documents (in triplicate - an original and 2 copies):

  • A passport or birth certificate to prove your citizenship.
  • The appropriate immigration form (tourist card).
  • A valid vehicle registration certificate in the driver's name.
  • The leasing contract (if the vehicle is leased or rented) which must be in the name of the person importing the car.
  • A valid driver's license, issued outside Mexico.
  • An international credit card, also issued outside Mexico in the name of the driver of the vehicle.

If you don't have an international credit card, you must pay a large bond (in the thousands of dollars depending on your vehicle).

Autopistas (Freeways)
Mexican freeways are of varying standards, although well surfaced toll roads (cuotas) are becoming more common. It is now possible to get all the way from the Texas border to Acapulco on an expressway, as well as down the Baja coast. Watch out for livestock in the road.

Breaking your journey
Rest stops are not common on Mexican expressways, although you will usually find clean facilities in and around toll booths.

Petrol (Gasoline)
Be choosy about where you fill up and attempt to stick to larger stations. It is not uncommon for the pump-attendent to fail to clear the pump before starting to fill your tank (meaning you end up paying for the guy in front's fuel). Don't be shy about keeping a firm eye on proceedings.

Crime advice
Mexico has a poor crime reputation and you are advised to take all the standard precautions for staying safe. You are also advised to avoid driving after dark.

Law enforcement
Law enforcement is erratic. You may also be confused by the principle of guilty until proven innocent. Checkpoints are common, but are not as scary as they first appear. Be respectful of law enforcement officers at all times - you do not want to get on the wrong side of a Mexican policeman or woman.

Documents
At all times you must carry:

  • A passport or birth certificate to prove your citizenship.
  • The appropriate immigration form (tourist card).
  • A valid vehicle registration certificate.
  • The leasing contract (if the vehicle is leased or rented).
  • A valid driver's license, issued outside Mexico.

Insurance is not mandatory, but recommended. US or Canadian insurance is not valid in Mexico.  Please check with your rental company before taking a US or Canadian hire car into Mexico.

Alchol
Do not be caught drink-driving, you will regret it.
See our guide to maximum blood alcohol limits.

Seat Belts
Seat belts must be worn by the driver, but not any passengers.
