Holland (The Netherlands)

Holland is a country that hasn't developed an obsession with the car. Townsa and cities go out of there way to make driving difficult and encourage public or bicycle transport.
The Dutch themselves are not renowned for their road courtesy.

Autoroutes (Motorways, Freeways)
Motorways in Holland are toll free. There is a 60kph minimum speed.

Petrol (Gasoline)
All types of unleaded (Loodvrije benzine) are available as well as diesel.

Law enforcement
Traffic offences can carry heavy, often on-the-spot fines. If you are fined always ask for a receipt.
Speed cameras, speed traps and unmarked vehicles are widely used to monitor speeding; exceeding the maximum speed limit can incur heavy penalties including substantial fines. Be vigilant on motorways where the maximum speed can vary. Overhead illuminated lane indicators - when in use - are mandatory. Never exceed the indicated speed limit where road works are taking place.
Using a mobile phone whilst driving a motor vehicle is illegal and can lead to a heavy fine. It is however permitted to use mobile phones with "hands free" equipment.

Speed Limits - see our speed converter
Motorway - car 120 kph, with trailer 80 kph
Open Road - 90 kph, with trailer 80 kph
Town - 50 kph

Minimum age for car drivers
18 (even if you legally hold a license at a younger age in your country it is still illegal to drive in Holland if not 18)

Documentation
At all times you must be able to prove that you are a) licensed to drive the category of vehicle you are in b) either the owner of the vehicle or that you have a owner's permission to drive c) insured. Licenses must be photocard licenses. If you do not have one you must also carry your passport.

Country of origin stickers
Country of origin stickers (e.g. GB stickers) must be used in Holland, unless your license plate has the sticker pre-applied.

Headlights
Right-hand drive cars must be adapted using headlight deflectors before you can drive in Holland, even during daylight hours. Spare bulbs are recommended.

Warning triangle
Warning triangles are compulsory. Note that if you intend to drive on into Spain or Italy you will need two.

Fluorescent vests
Fluorescent vests are not required in Holland, but they are required in Italy, so if you are travelling into this country a vest must be carried and worn in the event of a breakdown.

Alcohol
The blood alcohol limit is very low at 0.25 milligrams of alcohol per litre of blood (much lower than the UK at 0.4mg/l) so the simple advise is don't drink and drive. See our guide to maximum blood alcohol limits.

Seat belts
Seat belts must be worn front and rear.

Children
Children aged 0 - 3 years must use correct child safety seat/harness if available. Older children must use correct child safety seat/harness or seat belt.

Cyclists
Cyclists on cycle paths have right of way including on roundabouts
