Belgium
Autoroutes (Motorways,
Freeways)
Belgian autoroutes are toll-free. A minimum
speed of 70kph applies unless otherwise indicated.
Petrol (Gasoline)
All types of unleaded (Normale sans Plomb,
Super sans Plomb) are available as well as diesel. LPG is less often found.
Credit cards are widely accepted. Service stations close overnight and on
Sundays.
Law enforcement
On 1 March 2004, the Belgian Government
introduced a new law to improve road safety. Speed traps, cameras and
unmarked vehicles are operational throughout the country. Fines have
increased dramatically (e.g. up to € 2,750/£ 1,830 for exceeding the speed
limit by 40 km/hr). Visitors to Belgium will have to pay on the spot.
Vehicles may be impounded if they are unable to pay.
Mobile phones can only be used if hands-free.
Speed Limits - see our
speed converter
Motorway - car 120 kmh, with trailer 90 kph
Open Road - 90 kmh
Town - 50 kph
Minimum age for car drivers
18 (even if you legally hold a license at a
younger age in your country it is still illegal to drive in Belgium if not
18)
Documentation
At all times you must be able to prove that
you are a) licensed to drive the category of vehicle you are in b) either
the owner of the vehicle or that you have a owner's permission to drive c)
insured. Licenses must be photocard licenses. If you do not have one you
must also carry your passport.
Country of origin stickers
Country of origin stickers (e.g. GB stickers)
must be used in Belgium, unless your license plate has the sticker
pre-applied.
Headlights
Right-hand drive cars must be adapted using
headlight deflectors before you can drive in Belgium, even during daylight
hours. Spare bulbs are recommended.
Warning triangle
One warning triangles is compulsory.
Alcohol
The blood alcohol limit is very low at 0.25
milligrams of alcohol per litre of blood (much lower than the UK at 0.4mg/l)
so the simple advise is don't drink and drive. Frequent alcohol checks are
made, in daytime as well as at night. Drunk drivers will be breathalysed. A
blood sample will be taken from those who refuse to be breathalysed. Fines
are heavy depending on the degree of intoxication and range from € 1,100 / £
730 to € 11,000 / £ 7,300. In certain cases driving licences will be
confiscated immediately. See our guide to
maximum blood alcohol limits.
Seat belts
Seat belts must be worn front and rear.
Children
Children under 12 can only travel in the
front if suitably restrained i.e. a booster seat.
General notes
Drivers should also be aware of the ‘priority
to the right’ rule: drivers must stop for traffic joining from the right,
except on motorways, roundabouts, and roads sign-posted with an orange
diamond within a white background.
